KIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE TWEET BY THE TURKISH DEPUTY FM COMPARING EVROS TO AUSCHWITZ

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece condemns and denounces the unacceptable and deplorable comparison between Auschwitz and the situation at the Greek-Turkish border in Evros region, made by the Turkish deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs on social media.

Six million Jews were persecuted, hunted down, deported, tortured and exterminated by the Nazis in the most industrialized and barbaric method in the gas chambers of Auschwitz and in other German concentration and extermination camps.

The policy of the Turkish government to exploit innocent people and create impressions by trivializing the Holocaust for political purposes is nothing but an obscene and despicable operation of misinformation and disorientation of the global public opinion.

We urge the Turkish deputy F.M. to retract his comment and apologize for this unsustainable comparison that insults the memory of all Holocaust victims.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE VANDALISM OF THE HOLOCAUST MONUMENT IN TRIKALA Print E-mail
Friday, 03 January 2020 14:24
Unfortunately, once more we express our sorrow, outrage and concern over the new vandal attack against a Jewish site in Trikala, the second within two days. Following the desecration of the Synagogue, the Holocaust Monument was vandalized, with part of the surrounding fence been severely damaged and the ornamenting Magen David been detached. It is to be noted that in February and March 2019 the Monument had been three times vandalized with antisemitic graffiti.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece reacted swiftly and addressed letters to the Minister of Citizen Protection, the Mayor of Trikala and the Chief of the Police department in Trikala asking for the arrest of the perpetrators and their prosecution, the adoption of effective security measures for the protection of all Jewish sites -thus the Synagogue, the Holocaust Monument and the Jewish cemetery- so that such actions -that damage the image of the city both in Greece and abroad- are prevented from happening again in the future.

We hope that the city of Trikala, the Municipality, the Church and the civil society will safeguard the city’s history and heritage against the followers of intolerance and antisemitism.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE ANTISEMITIC GRAFFITI AT THE SYNAGOGUE OF TRIKALA Print E-mail
Friday, 03 January 2020 13:34
During these solemn holy days that the light of love is spread all over the world, some still promote hatred against the Jews!

The hideous antisemitic graffiti with which the newly restored historic Synagogue of Trikala was desecrated, causes but deep sorrow and repugnance. It reminds us that the snake’s egg is still incubating within our society and that the struggle against antisemitism needs to be continuous and the vigilance relentless.

We condemn this vile act and call upon the competent authorities to take all necessary measures for the arrest and punishment of the perpetrators, as well as for the protection of the Jewish sites in Trikala, a city that has proved to show zero tolerance to bigotry and racism.

The burning of the Israeli flag, which occurred in Athens within the context of a basketball game between a Greek and an Israeli team, is a condemnable action.

The burning of any flag at the same time puts in violent dispute the right of any people to exist in its homeland.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the repugnance of the Greek Jewry for this hideous act along with its belief that such attitudes are condemned by the Greek people as a whole, whether in or out of the sports stadiums.

KIS STATEMENT FOR KRISTALLNACHT AND GREEK PM’s ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE ADOPITION OF IHRA’S DEFINITION OF ANTISEMITISM Print E-mail
Monday, 11 November 2019 07:57
Tonight, November 9, 2019, we remember that sad night of November 9, 1938 when in Adolf Hitler's Germany became the first mass pogrom against Jews.

That night, people didn't hear the crystal sounds. The world was indifferent. It was related only to the Jews!  But the "Kristallnacht" was the beginning of the atrocities of Nazism that caused the industrialized death of 6,000,000 Jews and millions of other victims of racism and intolerance.

Despite the total disaster, the world has not been taught that Anti-Semitism can be launched against the Jews, but it does not stop to the Jews. It threatens the very life and existence of every human being and attempts to enforce inhumanity, violating any humanitarian value.

We therefore welcome the announcement by the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, that Greece adopts the definitions of Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial as voted on by the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) and their integration into legislation and education. Today, on the 81st anniversary of the "Kristallnacht”, Greece sent a powerful message: that our country stands against anti-Semitism, fanaticism and xenophobia.
