VANDALISM OF THE MURAL DEDICATED TO THE DEPORTATION TO THE JEWS OF THESSALONIKI

Vandal antisemites roam freely and stain undisturbed any attempt to preserve Holocaust memory in Thessaloniki.

For the second time, the mural commemorating the deportation of the Jews of Thessaloniki to the German extermination camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, which was created by the "Vardaris Neighborhood Group" and adorns the surrounding wall of the new railway station of Thessaloniki, with views from the pre-war and occupation periods of Thessaloniki, was vandalized.

This time the nostalgics of Nazism declared their intentions and anti-Jewish hatred with swastikas and fascist symbols.

This is the second anti-Semitic incident in a few days, after the desecration of the Monument dedicated to the old Jewish cemetery of Thessaloniki at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

KIS CONDEMS VANDALISM OF THE JEWISH MONUMENT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI
The Monument dedicated to the Jewish cemetery situated in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was once more target of hideous vandalism. A swastika was sprayed on the grave that symbolizes the sacredness of the Jewish cemetery -one of the oldest in Europe- which was destroyed in 1942 by the Nazis and their collaborators, as well as the annihilation of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, the largest in Greece, during the Holocaust. The marble dedication of the Monument was also desecrated with a fascist symbol.

With the stain of the horrific Nazi swastika and a fascist-inspired graffiti we bid farewell to 2022, a year during which no incidents of vandalism of Jewish sites were registered in Greece. We condemn the unholy act of the vandals, followers of intolerance and antisemitism that express their hatred and fanaticism through the profanation of the memory of the Salonican Jews. No tolerance to antisemitism!

We call on the Law enforcement authorities to be mobilized in order to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to Justice.

LUMINOUS POSTER AT OTE, PREVEZA, FOR THE JEWISH POPULATION AND SYNAGOGUE OF THE CITY Print E-mail
Monday, 04 April 2022 08:30

A big luminous poster at the OTE shop in Preveza informs passersby that, where currently stands the Greek Telecommunications Group building, once stood the city’s Synagogue.  The poster – placed next to the marble plaque with the history of the building, once enwalled in the Synagogue of Preveza – provides also information about life before the war of the city’s Jewish population and the Holocaust.

The initiative began after the proposal of the Cultural Association “Preveza” to the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), in 2020, suggesting a more contemporary signage of the historic building.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece accepted the proposal and contacted the OTE Group administration for approval and contribution to the implementation of the project. With a high sense of social responsibility and respect for History, OTE Group and OTE Estate swiftly responded, approving the project and assigning it to the appropriate technical services.

KASTORIA 2022: COMMEMORATION CEREMONY for THE JEWISH COMMUNITY OF KASTORIA Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 March 2022 08:49

78 years have passed since March 24, 1944, when about 1,000 Jews of Kastoria were arrested and imprisoned in order to be led to the Nazi death camps in Poland, erasing the traces of a thriving community that lived in harmony with Christians for a millennium.

The Memory of the Jews of Kastoria cannot and should not pass into oblivion.

With their thoughts on the tragic events of that grim day, the institutions of Kastoria and representatives of the Jewish Communities from all over Greece paid tribute to those individuals, in the context of a subtle ceremony held by the Municipality of Kastoria on 27.3.2022.

KIS CONDEMNS TERRORISM FOLLOWING NEW ATTACK IN HADERA IN ISRAEL Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 March 2022 12:31

The latest terror attack of the organization of the “Islamic State” in Hadera, in Northern Israel, just a few days after the deadly attack in Beersheba, indicates the outburst of religious fanaticism and hatred against Jews on the very day of the historic meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Israel, Egypt, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Morocco.

Once more the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece condemns Islamic extremism and terrorism targeting innocent civilians. Fanaticism -wherever it derives from- on the pretext of the intentionally distorted religious commands, fuels hatred, arms the hands of the murderers and perpetrates the blood cycle, while undermining perspectives of peace and prosperity in the region.

Monday, 21 March 2022 12:58

The series of exhibitions entitled “In the same city. Christians and Jews in Thessaloniki” was inaugurated in the afternoon of Sunday March 20, 2022, at the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, by the Greek Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni. As Mrs. Mendoni stressed in her speech “the Jewish Museum and its collections will be the core of the collections of the Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki, which the government aims to do as soon as possible”. “We want it to become reality so that it houses not only the memory, but also the history and the cultural identity of the Jewish community, because we owe it to our homeland, to Greece, to Thessaloniki, but especially to all those who were lost, because there were many who got on the train and never returned,” the Minister said.
