NEW VANDAL ATTACK AGAINST TOMB AT THE JEWISH CEMETERY OF IOANNINA

Antisemitism targets even the dead. For the second time in less than a month a tomb was found vandalized at the Jewish cemetery of Ioannina. The  vandals chose the period of the High Holidays of the Jewish faith for the manifestation of their antisemitic hatred with the hideous act of removing the tombstone of a grave. Shame!

The State as well as the local authorities need to take all necessary measures for the safety of the Jewish Community and its sacred sites all over Greece, and particularly in Ioannina, where the Jewish cemetery has been the target of hatred attacks repeatedly in the past. Let the dead rest in peace!

MINISTER OF HEALTH THANOS PLEVRIS: I APOLOGIZE TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE
The newly appointed Minister of Health Thanos Plevris, reacted swiftly to the announcement of KIS regarding his past references to Auschwitz, with a statement posted on his social media accounts (Sept. 1st, 2021). The statement reads: My respect towards the victims of the Holocaust of the Jews is absolute and I am contrary to any kind of antisemitism. I have demonstrated it through many public statements, in a manner beyond any doubt. The reservations of KIS about me -due to my statement while acting as defense lawyer of my father, whom I totally disagree with- are understandable.

I never wanted to insult the Jewish people and I apologize if I have done so. I am sure that through my work as Minister of Health I will lift all the reservations of all those who doubt my respect to the victims of the Holocaust of the Jews and they will realize that I have no antisemitic feelings”.

KIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THANOS PLEVRIS AS MINISTER OF HEALTH
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses its concern for the appointment of Thanos Plevris as Minister of Health.

In 2009, Mr. Thanos Plevris stated the following, inter alia, before the Greek Court of Justice: «I will refer to issues that have puzzled you. You are concerned about the reference to Auschwitz. The one that says “to keep the camp of Auschwitz in good conditions”. I will examine the most extreme interpretation. That the defendant with this reference means: “Keep the camp of Auschwitz in good conditions because I want, at some point, the national socialist regime to come back, Hitler to come back, take the Jews and put them in Auschwitz”. What kind of instigation is this? What incitement is this? Is it that one is not allowed to believe and want to believe that “I want to exterminate someone”?».

We expect Mr. Thanos Plevris to apologize to the Jewish people for this reference and express his unequivocal condemnation of intolerance, antisemitism and Holocaust denialists, conforming with the declared positions of the Greek Prime Minister. We also hope that the new Minister will address all citizens equally, regardless of skin color, race or religion.

THE GREEK JEWRY AGAINST THE APPOINTMENT OF A “REVISIONIST” CONSULTANT AT THE INTERIOR MINISTRY Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 March 2013 07:31
-The Press Release of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece:

The appointment of Ioannis Kotoulas at the Greek Interior Ministry, as a consultant, aroused public attention and reactions. As reported in the press, I. Kotoulas is an educator who has published a book on the Third Reich in which he praises Hitler.
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, in a Press Release issued on March 12, 2013, asked for the immediate removal of the educator from office and the expressed the Greek Jewry’s outrage. As the Press Release states:
“What the ministerial adviser supports in his revisionist books about Hitler and the shameless justification he attempts to give for Hitler’s concentration camps, the aerial bombardment of Greek cities by the Luftwaffe and Nazi policy are an insult to the memories of the victims of the German occupation and the Holocaust.
At a moment when the struggle against neonazism is a fight for the very Democracy in Greece, the revisionists of Nazi atrocities and the Holocaust cannot have a place at the services of the Greek State”.

-The Press Release of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki:

Further tο the information that recently became public regarding the appointment of Mr. Ioannis Kotoulas as advisor to the Ministry of Interior on issues of citizenship, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki condemns in the strongest possible manner the totality of the references in his book "The Rise of the Third Reich” according to which Nazism (National Socialism) is defined and presented as a “great revolution".
As a result of this "revolution" 50,000 innocents Greek Jews of Thessaloniki and 6,000,000 innocent Jews from all over Europe were murdered in gas chambers and crematoriums, in an inhuman manner, people who were targeted and incriminated solely because of their religion.

ANTISEMITIC POSTER IN THE STREETS OF ATHENS Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 February 2013 14:43
An antisemitic poster displaying a Magen David with a swastika interlaced in its center, is placed all over the main boulevards of Athens. The poster advertises the musical show of a provocative Greek singer. The same poster is also placed on the façade of the night club where the performance will be on show.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece addressed letters to the Minister of Justice, as well as to the Secretary General for Religions, of the Ministry of Education, asking for their competent reaction to this repulsive advertisement. As the Greek Jewry stresses in these letters: “The design depicted on the poster fiercely insults our very religion as well as the memory of the six million Jews, victims of the Holocaust”.

In addition to the above, our Board addressed letters to the mayors of the local districts where the posters are placed, asking for their intervention for the removal of the insulting posters. There is already positive reaction on behalf of some municipalities.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE INTERPELLATION SUBMITTED BY A GOLDEN DAWN M.P. Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 February 2013 08:22
Following an interpellation motion submitted to the Greek Parliament by a Golden Dawn M.P. in which he severely criticizes the commemoration events held on the Holocaust Remembrance Day, and condemns the educational initiatives and the teaching of Holocaust history in Greek schools, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued an announcement expressing the concern and the outrage of the Greek Jewry and called upon all political parties to condemn its content.

As the announcement points out: “Now more than ever it is eminent to remind the explanatory report that introduced law 3218, which was unanimously voted by the Greek Parliament in 2004 and established the 27th of January as the national “Remembrance Day for Jewish Greek Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust”.
The report states: “The recognition of the Holocaust Remembrance Day aims at preserving the memory of our Jewish compatriots victims of the Holocaust. It also serves as a continuous reminder of what may happen if bigotry, hatred and indifference become the prevailing characteristics of a society.
Through the contact with the Holocaust history our intention is to stimulate our thought and activity with regard to major moral issues related to the Holocaust, as well as to our responsibility as citizens of a democratic society”.

Thursday, 07 March 2013 14:00
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following Press Release, with regard to a documentary broadcasted by the British TV Channel 4 on the practices of Golden Dawn:

The Greek Jews feel outrage and repudiation for the hideous and repulsive desire expressed by a Nazism seeker, member of the Golden Dawn, to revive the industrialized methods of extermination of people.
Six million Jews, along with millions of other “different” people, were murdered in the crematoria in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek, Treblinka and in other Nazi extermination camps during the implementation of the “Final Solution” of the “Jewish problem” by the Nazis.
One more time, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece calls upon the Government and the democratic parties to reinforce legislation and fortify Democracy against all those who threaten it with racist, anti-Semitic, and neonazi behaviors and ideology.
