MEMORIAL UNVEILING IN THE LIANOKLADI TRAIN STATION IN MEMORY OF THE JEWS FORCED TO SLAVE LABOUR IN THE RAILWAYS DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION
An unknown aspect of the occupation and the Holocaust of the Greek Jews came to light with the unveiling of the reconstructed monument for the Jews who were sent by the Nazis to slave labor on the railway network of the Lianokladi-Karya area (Central Greece, Fthiotida region). The unveiling took place at noon on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the Lianokladi railway station, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Costas Karamanlis. The original Monument -erected in 1988- was probably destroyed during the renovation of the Lianokladi railway station.

The new Monument was rebuilt with the approval and actions of the Hellenic Railways Organization (HRO), and the cooperation of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), and was located to a prominent position, at the station dock to remind of the extent of the Nazis’ atrocities. The unveiling began with addresses by the President of the HRO Mr. Spyridon Pateras, the President of KIS Mr. David Saltiel and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis, who unveiled the Memorial after a prayer from the Rabbi of Athens, Mr. Gabriel Negrin. MARGARITIS SCHINAS VISISTED THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF THESSALONIKI – “NO ROOM FOR FASCISM AND NAZISM”

"In modern European Greece, but also in democratic Thessaloniki, there is no room for fascism and Nazism. Those who make the mistake of insisting on these practices should know that history will remind them of what happened," the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, said on Sunday October 10, 2021, during his visit to the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki while assuring the Jewish communities of Europe that the European Union will support them in the face of modern threats. Schinas sent a clear message that Thessaloniki is a European metropolis in which there is no room for rhetorical hatred.

Thessaloniki will always remain a European metropolis of extroversion, democracy, peaceful coexistence, and dialogue. "A European metropolis where raiding battalions, rhetoric and symbols of hatred do not fit."
Schinas' visit to Thessaloniki and the Jewish Museum is of particular importance as it took place a few days after the presentation of the EU's first strategy to fight anti-Semitism and preserve Jewish life, which was emphasized by the European Commission Vice-President.

"As Vice President, I want to assure the Jewish communities in Europe that the EU will not leave them unprotected from the many modern threats that are overshadowing their lives today. We will guarantee their safety, we will strengthen their education and culture, we will do everything to preserve the historical memory of the Holocaust, especially now that the last survivors are leaving us without their personal stories," Schinas underlined.

Mr. David Saltiel, the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, welcomed and accompanied Mr. Schinas to the tour of the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki. Mr. Saltiel expressed the appreciation of the world Jewry for the “remarkable work in support of the Jewish Communities in Europe” achieved by the EC Vice President. “It is our duty to promote knowledge and research, educate the young people so that they are immune to neo-Nazi ideologies, because these ideas abolish human rights and the very values of humanism”, said Mr. Saltiel. “We must continue our fight against fascism, racism and antisemitism. This Museum is a pillar of knowledge. The schools that visit it learn about the history of the Holocaust, while educational trips to the Museum of Auschwitz are organized so that the youngsters realize the magnitude of the Holocaust. As years go by and the survivors pass away, the duty to preserve memory and fight antisemitism passes on to us”, Saltiel stressed.

KIS WELCOMES THE NEW EU STRATEGY FOR COMBATTING ANTISEMITISM

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece welcomes the groundbreaking action plan of the European Commission for combatting antisemitism and fostering Jewish life.

We congratulate Mr Margaritis Schinas, the Vice President of the European Commission for Promoting our European Way of Life, who played a key role in planning the new strategy to confront antisemitism in Europe.

The new strategy -as presented in the detailed and concise document released yesterday by the European Commission- is an innovative project that covers three basic stages -prevention, protection and education / research- the interaction of which we believe that will effectively combat the menace of antisemitism that revives in Europe. Within the context of his visit in our country, Mr. Schinas will visit the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki and will be briefed by the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, Mr. David Saltiel, on the progress of the project of the Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki.

In our country, where antisemitism continues to manifest despite the noteworthy educational programs implemented in recent years in Greece, the project of the EU for 2021 – 2030, through the multitude of the opportunities and means it provides, will contribute to the realization of coordinated actions targeting antisemitism.

The Greek as well as the world Jewry is looking forward to taking active part in the implementation of this project, hoping that altogether we will succeed in uprooting antisemitic hatred from the contemporary society. A society free of antisemitism means brotherhood, it means respect of diversity and respect of the fundamental human rights.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following Press Release, with regard to a documentary broadcasted by the British TV Channel 4 on the practices of Golden Dawn:

The Greek Jews feel outrage and repudiation for the hideous and repulsive desire expressed by a Nazism seeker, member of the Golden Dawn, to revive the industrialized methods of extermination of people.
Six million Jews, along with millions of other “different” people, were murdered in the crematoria in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Majdanek, Treblinka and in other Nazi extermination camps during the implementation of the “Final Solution” of the “Jewish problem” by the Nazis.
One more time, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece calls upon the Government and the democratic parties to reinforce legislation and fortify Democracy against all those who threaten it with racist, anti-Semitic, and neonazi behaviors and ideology.

Following an interpellation motion submitted to the Greek Parliament by a Golden Dawn M.P. in which he severely criticizes the commemoration events held on the Holocaust Remembrance Day, and condemns the educational initiatives and the teaching of Holocaust history in Greek schools, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued an announcement expressing the concern and the outrage of the Greek Jewry and called upon all political parties to condemn its content.

As the announcement points out: “Now more than ever it is eminent to remind the explanatory report that introduced law 3218, which was unanimously voted by the Greek Parliament in 2004 and established the 27th of January as the national “Remembrance Day for Jewish Greek Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust”.
The report states: “The recognition of the Holocaust Remembrance Day aims at preserving the memory of our Jewish compatriots victims of the Holocaust. It also serves as a continuous reminder of what may happen if bigotry, hatred and indifference become the prevailing characteristics of a society.

AJC DELEGATION CONCLUDES VISIT TO GREECE Print E-mail
Monday, 28 January 2013 09:05
January 25, 2013 – Athens – AJC, the global advocacy organization, concluded a two-day visit to Greece on Friday. The ten-person AJC group, chaired by Executive Director David Harris, was joined by Greek-American leader and former Assistant Secretary of Commerce Andrew Manatos. Leaders of Greece's Jewish community, including Central Board President David Saltiel and Athens President Benjamin Albalas, as well as AJC leaders from across the U.S., rounded out the delegation.
AJC was received at the highest levels of the Greek government, beginning with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, with whom the group met for 90 minutes.  In addition, the program included separate meetings with six members of the Cabinet – the ministers of foreign affairs, national defense, public order, justice, education and tourism. The delegation also met with Evangelos Venizelos, president of PASOK, the junior coalition partner in the current government, as well as the ambassadors of the United States and Israel to Greece.
The presence of AJC in Greece raised the ire of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which decried the visit as an attempt to exert "Jewish influence over Greek political issues."  A statement released by Golden Dawn Thursday evening went on to assail Harris and predict that Greece's political leadership "will once again express its total subjugation to the whims of the ‘chosen’ people."
