Two sketches by Michalis Kountouris, with strong messages of demonisation of Israel and unacceptable parallelism with the Holocaust, were published in the “Efimerida Syntakton” (EFSYN. - "Editors' Journal") on 10th and 11th April 2018. The sketches were commented on with the following article entitled "Bloody Handprints" - published in the issue of the EFSYN of 16.4.18 - by the journalist and General Secretary of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, Victor Is. Eliezer.
The sketches also stirred a reaction from Israel's Ambassador to Greece, Ms. Irit Ben-Abba (letter to the EFSYN 11/4/2018), and journalist Dimitris Psarras (through his article "We do not Forget the Holocaust" EFSYN  16/4/2018).
  • Victor Is. Eliezer: "Bloody Handprints" EFIMERIDA SYNTAKTON  16/4/2018
Yom Hashoah. Holocaust Day, 11th April 2018. The Jews mourn for their 6,000,000 fellow Jews who were unjustly and brutally killed in the gas chambers of the Nazi camps! On the same day, in Greece, the "EFSYN", known for its merciless struggle against anti-Semitism and neo-Nazism, hosted a sketch in which an Israeli soldier leaves the prints of his bloodied hands on the Wailing Wall, next to many other bloody handprints of other people who apparently prayed before him. You know, all the Jews have visited the Wailing Wall, many of us pray and touch the Wall that is what is left of the Temple of Solomon. The bloody handprints, according to the cartoonist, could be the bloody handprints of every Jew who has visited the Wailing Wall!  One day earlier, another sketch (by the same cartoonist) appeared in the newspaper, where the Gaza Strip was identified with a prisoner of Nazi concentration camps.
Sketches that would be envied by the Nazi propaganda architect, Joseph Goebbels, in order to prove the criminal character of the Jews of that time. Alas though! 74 years later, it is not possible to demonise the Jew and indeed on Holocaust day! But the Israeli soldier, the Israeli citizen, can be identified with "absolute evil": With the Nazis! So no one can be blamed for anti-Semitism. Wrong! The identification of the Israelis with "absolute evil" is nothing more than the stripping of the State of Israel from any moral value. It is precisely what Goebbels sought and succeeded, that is the stripping of the Jew of all moral values in order to lead the Germans, the most civilised nation of Europe, to the execution of the most criminal plan for the industrial elimination of the Jewish people. And his design included sketches... Goebbels' sketches were a denial of the Jews' right to life. They were sketches of traditional anti-Semitism.
Criticism of a state's policy is absolutely respected, necessary and often useful. No one can tolerate the image of an Israeli soldier shooting an unarmed person in cold blood. But the criminal behaviour of a soldier, who was brought before Israeli Justice and condemned by the vast majority of public opinion, cannot justify the identification of a whole nation with "absolute evil." Demonisation of the state of Israel is a denial of the right of its existence, and that is the form of modern anti-Semitism. It is precisely this demonisation that is sought through the sketches hosted by the "Efimerida Syntakton". Sketches that would gladly be adopted by any aspiring terrorist in order to document his hatred against the Jews and Israel.
Iran and its satellites, Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon seek the disappearance of the State of Israel. It is not me who says so. They proclaim it in every way, by any means. And I really wonder how any serious army would react in defense of its country's safety when tens of thousands of people attempt to violate internationally recognised borders, in order to, and I repeat that this is what they proclaim themselves, wipe out the inhabitants of this country.  The southern border of Israel was internationally recognised after the peace treaty which was signed with Egypt in 1978 and the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Hamas once again uses the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a human shield to compromise the safety of Israeli citizens.
As Golda Meir, former Prime Minister of Israel, said, in order to achieve peace, the Arabs must love their children more than they hate the Israelis. It was done by the Egyptians, it was done by the Jordanians, the Saudis do it, and they live peacefully with Israel. Let us hope that soon the Palestinians will also do so in order to acquire their own homeland beside Israel and not instead of Israel.
