VISIT OF THE E.C. VICE PRESIDENT, MARGARITIS SCHINAS, TO THE CENTRAL BOARD OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN GREECE AND THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF GREECE - MEETING WITH THE LEADERS OF THE GREEK JEWRY Print E-mail
Friday, 05 November 2021 09:16

On November 3rd 2021, the Vice-President of the European Commission for the Promotion of the European Way of Life Mr. Margaritis Schinas had a meeting with members of the Presidium of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) at the offices of the Organization. Mr. Schinas was accompanied by the head of the E.C. delegation to Greece, Mrs. Niovi Rigou, and his assistant on policy issues, Mr. Elias Iordanidis. Starting his introductory remarks, Mr. Schinas emphasized the clear commitment of the European institutions, the Commission and himself personally, to the fight against anti-Semitism. The members of KIS Presidium, the President David Saltiel, the Vice-President Manos Alchanatis, the General Secretary Victor Eliezer and the General Treasurer Daniel Benardout, updated the E.C. Vice-President on crucial issues concerning the Greek Jewry.

The discussion focused mainly on anti-Semitism and on the security of sacred sites of Jewish interest in Europe in general, but also in Greece in particular, as well as on the programs launched by the E.U. - especially after the recent announcement of the E.U. Strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life (2021-2030). It was pointed out that synagogues and Jewish cemeteries are often targets of anti-Semitic violence and Mr. Schinas reassured KIS that both he and the European Commission are determined to protect Jewish life in Europe.

KIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON COURT JUDGEMENT ON KOSHER SLAUGHTER Print E-mail
Friday, 29 October 2021 14:40
The Greek Jewry is highly concerned about the Judgement of the Hellenic Council of the State no 1751/2021, which annuls the Joint Ministerial Decision of 2017.

This Judgement -which literally forbids Kosher religious slaughter- is a strike against the right of the Greek Jews to freely practice their religion and observe the traditions of Jewish faith. Keeping kosher diet is an integral part of the Judaic law, it is being observed throughout centuries, and its banning would constitute a heavy blow to the Jewish way of life.

We hope that the Greek State’s competent authorities will regulate the issue of animal slaughter with a just and viable solution that will safeguard the continuation of the observance of the religious duties of the Greek Jews, as well as of the thousands of Jewish visitors in Greece.

MEMORIAL UNVEILING IN THE LIANOKLADI TRAIN STATION IN MEMORY OF THE JEWS FORCED TO SLAVE LABOUR IN THE RAILWAYS DURING THE GERMAN OCCUPATION Print E-mail
Friday, 15 October 2021 07:04
An unknown aspect of the occupation and the Holocaust of the Greek Jews came to light with the unveiling of the reconstructed monument for the Jews who were sent by the Nazis to slave labor on the railway network of the Lianokladi-Karya area (Central Greece, Fthiotida region). The unveiling took place at noon on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at the Lianokladi railway station, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. Costas Karamanlis. The original Monument -erected in 1988- was probably destroyed during the renovation of the Lianokladi railway station.

The new Monument was rebuilt with the approval and actions of the Hellenic Railways Organization (HRO), and the cooperation of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS), and was located to a prominent position, at the station dock to remind of the extent of the Nazis’ atrocities. The unveiling began with addresses by the President of the HRO Mr. Spyridon Pateras, the President of KIS Mr. David Saltiel and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis, who unveiled the Memorial after a prayer from the Rabbi of Athens, Mr. Gabriel Negrin. The Metropolitan Bishop of Fthiotida H.E. Symeon, also addressed the event.

MINISTER OF HEALTH THANOS PLEVRIS: I APOLOGIZE TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 September 2021 09:07
The newly appointed Minister of Health Thanos Plevris, reacted swiftly to the announcement of KIS regarding his past references to Auschwitz, with a statement posted on his social media accounts (Sept. 1st, 2021). The statement reads: My respect towards the victims of the Holocaust of the Jews is absolute and I am contrary to any kind of antisemitism. I have demonstrated it through many public statements, in a manner beyond any doubt. The reservations of KIS about me -due to my statement while acting as defense lawyer of my father, whom I totally disagree with- are understandable.

I never wanted to insult the Jewish people and I apologize if I have done so. I am sure that through my work as Minister of Health I will lift all the reservations of all those who doubt my respect to the victims of the Holocaust of the Jews and they will realize that I have no antisemitic feelings”.

KIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THANOS PLEVRIS AS MINISTER OF HEALTH Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 September 2021 10:55
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses its concern for the appointment of Thanos Plevris as Minister of Health.

In 2009, Mr. Thanos Plevris stated the following, inter alia, before the Greek Court of Justice: «I will refer to issues that have puzzled you. You are concerned about the reference to Auschwitz. The one that says “to keep the camp of Auschwitz in good conditions”. I will examine the most extreme interpretation. That the defendant with this reference means: “Keep the camp of Auschwitz in good conditions because I want, at some point, the national socialist regime to come back, Hitler to come back, take the Jews and put them in Auschwitz”. What kind of instigation is this? What incitement is this? Is it that one is not allowed to believe and want to believe that “I want to exterminate someone”?».

We expect Mr. Thanos Plevris to apologize to the Jewish people for this reference and express his unequivocal condemnation of intolerance, antisemitism and Holocaust denialists, conforming with the declared positions of the Greek Prime Minister. We also hope that the new Minister will address all citizens equally, regardless of skin color, race or religion.
