GIVE GREECEā€™S NEW LEADER A CHANCE
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the right-of-center Greek prime minister in office for four weeks after decisively winning a national election, deserves the opportunity to govern before being judged. Mr. Tsimitakis, a supporter of Mr. Mitsotakis’s political rival, former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, did not give him that opportunity.

The Mitsotakis administration faces daunting challenges, including attracting foreign investment, reducing unemployment and grappling with difficult regional issues. These matters cannot be solved instantaneously. All have plagued previous governments.

Moreover, Mr. Tsimitakis levels a disingenuous charge of nepotism against Mr. Mitsotakis. His nephew Kostas Bakoyannis was elected mayor of Athens by the city’s residents a month before Mr. Mitsotakis’s electoral victory. Also, Mr. Tsimitakis refers to the Holocaust-denying past of Makis Voridis, the minister of agriculture, but doesn’t note that he apologized twice to the Jewish community and that a page has been turned.

MAKIS VORIDIS VISITED THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF GREECE AND STRESSED THE PRIORITY OF FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM

Rural Development and Foods Minister Makis Voridis paid a visit to the Jewish Museum of Greece on Monday, where he was given a tour by the museum director Zanet Battinou. In statements afterward, he once again expressed his opposition to all forms of hate speech and said that the fight against the "noxious phenomenon of antisemitism" was a priority, while encouraging people to visit the museum, which he described as "excellent".

Voridis was the first minister in the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to visit the museum, where he was greeted as a "friend of the Jewish people and the Jewish community in Greece" by the General Secretary of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) Viktor Eliezer.

The minister said his presence signaled the support of the Greek state in highlighting the history and long presence of the Greek Jews in the country since ancient times.

ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE CENTRAL BOARD OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN GREECE Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 May 2011 13:19

Music unites people and reminds. Thus the trilogy “Mauthausen” opera, written by the late Iakovos Kampanellis and composed by Mikis Theodorakis, is an hymn to the victims of the Holocaust. This opera cannot change cannot be censured.
Unfortunately, statements made by Mikis Theodorakis in the past few years, such as “The Jews are at the root of evil” and that the Jews are responsible for the international financial crisis, have caused not only astonishment but deep distress as well, even more because Mikis Theodorakis is the co-author of this remarkable opera.

MIKIS THEODORAKIS' LETTER TO THE CENTRAL BOARD OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN GREECE Print E-mail
Monday, 16 May 2011 07:57
Dear Friends,
I read the announcement you posted on the Internet following the refusal of the President of the Austrian Parliament to allow the performance of my Mauthausen work which features poetry by Jakovos Kambanellis during the event held in memory of the victims of Nazism. Why do you persist in regarding me as an enemy of the Jews? Why do you not like the fact that I am a Living Symbol of anti-racism, whatever form it takes, including, of course, anti-Semitism?

DESECRATION OF THE JEWISH CEMETERY OF IOANNINA Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 June 2009 12:31
The Jewish Cemetery of Ioannina was subject to one more vandal attack, the third since January 2009.
On June 2, 2009, extremists brutally vandalized six tombs –among which that of the mother of the President of the local Jewish Community- destroyed part of the Holocaust Monument, situated in the cemetery, and daubed it with the blood of a turtle which had previously killed.
The President of the Jewish Community of Ioannina, Dr. Moses Elisaf, medicine professor at the local university as well as town councilor, urged local authorities to take measures for the arrest of the perpetrators and called upon his fellow-citizens to condemn these violent anti-Semitic attacks.
