KIS ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE POLITICAL SPOT OF SYRIZA

Opposition party of the Left “SYRIZA” uploaded a political video spot, entitled "How much does Moses Cost?" on the party’s website, facebook and You Tube channel, on June 19, 2020. The video, was produced in an attempt to criticize the Government’s funding of the mass media during the pandemic.

The reference to Moses in the video was strongly condemned by the Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA), the frm. President of the Athens Jewish Community Minos Moissis, the Secretary General of KIS Victor Eliezer and many prominent journalists. KIS issued the following announcement (June 22, 2020):

«When we watched SYRIZA’s political spot “How much does Moses cost?” we wondered how was it possible for a party with a determining contribution to the fight against antisemitism to reproduce antisemitic stereotypes in order to serve its opposition policy, linking Moses with the money falling down from the sky as the “manna from heaven”.

Three days after its launch the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses its regret over the fact that -in spite of the massive reactions- SYRIZA did not withdraw this spot, with its only reaction being that of characterizing it as “satiric”.

In times when conspiracy theories thrive and threaten peaceful coexistence within society, the perpetuation of stereotypical myths -especially when coming from a political party such as SYRIZA- nourishes the supporters of intolerance and anti-Semitism. We are sure that the leadership of SYRIZA will realize that this spot was -at the very least- an unfortunate accident and that it will withdraw it from public confrontation.

We hope that all sides will avoid the use of religious symbols and figures -especially when used with a negative connotation- because religious faith cannot and should not be part of any political confrontation».

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE NAZI SALUTE GIVEN BY PARTY LEADER Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 October 2012 10:37
The leader of "Golden Dawn" N. Michaloliakos gave a Nazi salute, while addressing a fascist youth gathering in Athens, on Saturday October 20, 2012. As the mass media reported, Michaloliakos, with an extended right hand, said: "They call us Nazis but they have never called us thieves. These hands may sometimes salute like this […] but they are clean hands. They are not dirty. They have not stolen". All political parties made condemnation statements.
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following announcement:

"The Nazi salute given by a leader of a Greek party represented in the Greek Parliament, demonstrates in the most brutal way the nature of the threat launched against Greek Democracy.
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece has repeatedly pointed out that the devotees of Nazism, who deny the Holocaust, use racial violence, and give the Nazi salute, are repulsive to the Greek democratic citizens, provoke the outrage of the Greek Jews and brutally insult the memory of the Holocaust victims and of the fighters who sacrificed their lives for the principles of liberty, dignity and civilization.

We call upon the state, the politicians as well as the society not only to remain vigilant but to immediately and urgently take all the necessary measures to protect the principles of Democracy that are openly threatened by the devotees of Nazism so as not to allow society to be drifted into the darkness of racial hatred and anti-Semitism.

Thursday, 11 October 2012 13:21
With regard to the appointment of Golden Dawn MP Eleni Zaroulia to the Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece addressed a letter to the Committee's Chairwoman Mrs. Tina Acketoft, expressing the Greek Jewry's distress and astonishment on the issue.

As pointed out in the letter: “As known, Mrs. Zaroulia is a Greek MP with the Golden Dawn party which promotes neonazi ideology and adopts racist and violent practices. Inter alia, the party’s leader has openly and publicly denied the Holocaust on TV just a few months ago.
On behalf of the Greek Jewry we express our astonishment and profound concern for the way and the criteria of participation of a person representing such an ideology to the PACE Equality and Non-Discrimination Committee.
We express the belief that the Equality and Non-Discrimination Committee will not tolerate any manifestation, comment or expression of anti-Semitic or racial prejudice, and will safeguard the fundamental principles of democracy and respect of human rights”.
