KIS MESSAGE FOR YOM HAZIKARON & YOM HAATSMAOUT

From grief to joy, from memory to life, from loss to creation. This is the meaning of the sequence of Yom Hazikaron –the memorial day for the soldiers fallen in defense of Israel and the victims of terror- being superseded by Yom Haatsmaout, Israel’s Independence Day. Both anniversaries include in their very core the history of the creation of the modern State of Israel.

Today, the victims, those who heroically fell in the battlefield fighting for the independence of the Jewish home on the land of Israel, as well as for the safety of the citizens of the State of Israel, are commemorated. More than 50% of the soldiers who fought in the war of Independence of 1948 were Holocaust survivors, who had settled in the British Mandate Palestine in the aftermath of WWII seeking hope.

Tomorrow we celebrate Israel’s 73rd birthday. Israel, one of the youngest states in the world, has remarkably succeeded in incorporating ancient history, tradition, multicultural origins, pioneering thinking, technology, innovation and progress. A country that in its brief modern history offered its unreserved support on any occasion of natural disaster in any part of the world. The birth and the evolution of Israel have been rightfully described as “miracles”.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the Greek Jewry as a whole wish to the people and the State of Israel peace and prosperity and hope that its citizens will continue achieving modern-day miracles for the benefit of all humanity.

GREECE TAKES OVER IHRA PRESIDENCY FROM GERMANY
Today, 1 April, the IHRA Presidency will be handed over from Germany to Greece. This means that the outgoing Chair, Ambassador Michaela Küchler, will take on a supportive role as a member of the Troika, which comprises last year’s, this year’s and next year’s IHRA Chairs. (Watch HERE the remarks of Ambassador Kuchler regarding the German Presidency of IHRA)

Normally, handovers are marked by ceremonies hosted at an embassy in the incoming Presidency’s country. However, this year, in keeping with the digital spirit of the past year and in lieu of an in-person ceremony, the outgoing and incoming Chairs prepared Handover Videos. These provide great insight into the promising plans for the future and the fruitful efforts of the past.

Ambassador Michaela Küchler outlined the challenges and successes of this unprecedented year. “Being able to work together across time zones, from Winnipeg to Berlin to Melbourne, required more than just a working microphone and a stable internet connection,” she said. “It required all of us to want to get something done. And we did.”

MESSAGE OF KIS PRESIDENT DAVID SALTIEL FOR THE HANDOVER OF THE IHRA PRESIDENCY TO GREECE

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece is very pleased to welcome the handover of the Presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) to Greece.

Our country, member of IHRA since 2005, has a long term active role in initiatives for the preservation of the historic memory of the Shoah. The choice of the central theme “Teaching and Learning about the Holocaust: Education for a world with no more genocide” for Greece’s Presidency, demonstrates the importance attributed by Greece to Education and we are certain that the year inaugurated today will be filled with programs of core importance aiming at combating racism and anti-Semitism and establishing the respect of human rights in the conscience of the generations that will create the world of the future.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece always was and will continue to be a succor in IHRA’s important task, developing and reinforcing the constructive collaboration with its Head and the Greek Delegation of IHRA.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE TERROR ATTACK IN BULGARIA Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 July 2012 12:11
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses its repudiation for the latest terror attack against innocent Israeli citizens, which took place yesterday in Bulgaria and resulted in seven dead and dozens of wounded.
This hideous act, following last week’s attempt in Cyprus, reminds the humanity that hatred and fundamentalism feed blind terror which once more struck innocent Israelis, this time tourists visiting a country of the European Union.
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece conveys the Greek Jewry’s condolences to the families of the tragic victims and to the people of Israel. It also wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

GOVERNMENTAL CONDEMNATION OF HOLOCAUST DENIAL STATEMENTS Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:59
Minister of State & Government Spokesman Mr. Pantelis Kapsis made the following statement (May 14, 2012), in relation to the Holocaust denial statements made by the general secretary of “Golden Dawn” N. Mihaloliakos in a TV interview (“Protagonistes”, Mega channel, May 13, 2012):
“I wish to condemn in the most determined way these opinions which constitute a distortion of history and a fierce insult to the memory of the millions of Holocaust victims.
The Greek people do not forget that they mourned hundreds of thousands of dead owed to Nazism, amongst whom, tens of thousands of Greek Jews. We honor their memory and we fight against any attempt to forget, to falsify historic events and to revive intolerance”.

ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING INSULTING STATEMENTS BY NAZI DEVOTEES Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 May 2012 09:39
The election of devotees of Nazism has dealt the Greek Democracy a serious blow. Their own leader, who looks with nostalgia at the darkest days in European history and hankers after the suffering that spread across the whole of Europe, including Greece, verified this in his own words in an interview he gave on Mega channel (in “Protagonistes”, with St. Theodorakis) claiming, among other things, that there were no ovens [crematoria] or gas chambers at Auschwitz.
This is an affront to historical fact, to the memory of six million of our fellow Jews (70,000 of them Greek Jews) who were massacred in the death camps of Auschwitz, Dachau and Treblinka, and in the other places of industrialised extermination set up by Adolf Hitler for the implementation of the ‘Final Solution’ to the Jewish problem. It is an affront to surviving witnesses of the atrocities. It is an affront to all those who resisted and fought to stop the raging Nazi fury. It is an affront to the history of Greece, to the struggles and sacrifices that the people of Greece made in defence of the principles of liberty, democracy and humanity.
We call upon the Government of the Hellenic Republic, the political leaders of the country, social organizations, educational bodies, and people who uphold spiritual and cultural values to voice their unequivocal condemnation and to isolate the forces that aim to revive the darkest ideas ever to surface in European history.

OPEN LETTER: WE ARE ALL GREEK JEWS Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 May 2012 07:42
From the Website www.guardian.co.uk

The neo-Nazi party
Golden Dawn entered the Greek parliament this month. With its swastika-inspired emblem, Hitlerian salute, reference to Mein Kampf, antisemitic and racist ideology, Holocaust denial, violence against migrants, threats against journalists and personality cult, the party is the lineal heir of the German national-socialist party that led Europe and the world into chaos and bloodshed.
Unfortunately, Greece is not the only country threatened by this revival of Nazi ideology. In Latvia this year, the president of the republic has for the first time supported the annual former Waffen SS march, in spite of strong criticism. In Austria the FPÖ, an extreme right organisation that nurtures Third Reich nostalgia, is favourite in the polls for the next parliamentary elections. In Hungary, the Hungarian Guard Movement, descendant of The Arrow Cross party – the former militia responsible for the extermination of Jews and Gypsies – terrorises Jewish populations and holds direct responsibility for provoking deadly attacks against Roma people.
