KIS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE RETURN OF THE JEWISH ARCHIVES FROM MOSCOW

Our history returns home!

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the Greek Jews with immense emotion welcome the decision of the Russian President Putin that Russia returns the pre-War archives of the Greek Jewish Communities, and especially the archive of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki which was looted in July 11, 1942, by the Nazis who plundered archives, books and religious artifacts from 30 Synagogues, libraries and communal institutions in Thessaloniki.  In the aftermath of the takeover of Berlin by the soviet army, in May 1945, those archives were transferred to Moscow.

A long-term challenging struggle conducted by the Greek diplomacy and the Greek Jewry seems to come to an end thanks to the targeted actions of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. It is an achievement of vital significance to our country’s history. We express our thankfulness to the Greek Prime Minister and all those who have worked and continue working for the realization of the return of the pre-War Jewish archives to our country.

The indescribable tragic event that took place in France, a country with long traditional democratic values, has to arise a great concern for all of us. Apart from our deep grief and our sincere condolences towards the relatives of the innocent victims, the Jewish community as well as the French people, it is our duty to think what we do as individuals in order to deter such hideous events. No one, nevertheless, either country or nation is unaffected from racism, anti-Semitism and similar absurdities.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the American Jewish Committee share and continue a productive cooperation for more than two decades.
In the course of these years, in a vast scale of issues and on various occasions the AJC has repeatedly assisted the Greek Jewry.
Once more, in the past few months, the AJC has actively demonstrated its solidarity through two important support programmes offered during this difficult period when the consequences of the financial crisis have greatly afflicted Greek Jewish Communities, organizations and people.  The most recent donation of the AJC was made following David Harris’ visit to Greece and it includes the sum of 48.000 USD to be distributed to the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps in Greece, who are the most needy and delicate part of our Community. In January, AJC Executive Director David Harris headed a delegation that visited Athens and Thessaloniki. D. ANNOUNCEMENT on LAOS MPs JOINING the ND PARTY Print E-mail
Friday, 17 February 2012 14:59

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the Greek Jewry’s concern and surprise for the fact that two MPs, M. Voridis and A. Georgiadis,  recently expelled from the LAOS party, have joined the party of “New Democracy” (ND). In the past these MPs have expressed or associated themselves with insulting anti-Jewish views.

We hope that the leadership of  “New Democracy”, which is a leading Greek party, will take all necessary measures so that such views remain at the margins of the Greek society, and will safeguard the equality of all citizens regardless of race or religion, as provided for by the Constitution.

The Greek Jewry also believes that the same policy against racism and anti-Semitism, as endorsed by all democratic Greek and European parties, will continue.
