KIS PRESS RELEASE FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT IN GREECE

We were informed that the Greek Cabinet, during its meeting of August 30, 2022, sanctioned the proposal of the Justice Minister and appointed Supreme Court Judge Marianthi Pagouteli at the position of the Vice President of Greece’s Supreme Court (Areios Pagos).

During the first instance trial of Konstantinos Plevris* for his antisemitic book “Jews, the whole truth”, Mrs Pagouteli, Judge of Appeals at the time, gave a minority vote advocating for the acquittal of K. Plevris. Mrs Pagouteli in her 32page consideration behind the minority vote justified the antisemitic views of K. Plevris.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the strong resentment of the Greek Jewry for the appointment at the high level of the Greek Justice, of a person who cannot defend the declared position of the Greek State against antisemitism, even more so in the capacity of the Vice President of the Supreme Court of our country.

We express the certainty that the Greek Justice will safeguard the values of Democracy against the followers of intolerance and antisemitism.

Confirmed as Drowned: THE STORY OF THE SHIP TANAIS

Jewish Review of Books, Summer 2022

By Mark Glanville*

On December 14, 1906, a cargo steamship built at the Sunderland shipyards in the northeast of England was launched under the name Holywood. She was then purchased by a Greek shipowner in 1935, who renamed her Tanais, after the ancient Greek colony founded by Milesians. On May 26, 1941, during the Battle of Crete, the ship was sunk by the Luftwaffe, only to be raised and repaired by the Germans, who then deployed her as a cargo ship in the Aegean. In early June, the Nazis filled the holds of the ship with about nine hundred prisoners bound for Auschwitz, among them Cretan partisans, Italian prisoners of war, and the entire Jewish community of Crete, which comprised 299 souls, 88 of them children.

On June 9, the Tanais was torpedoed by the British submarine Vivid, killing all but a handful of passengers. This was the end of the Cretan Jewish community, which had thrived on the island for more than two thousand years. (Jews are said to have served as guards at the palace of Knossos, where King Minos had Daedalus build the labyrinth with his son the Minotaur at its center.)

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE ELECTIONS OF MAY 6, 2012 Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 06:11
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, which represents the Greek Jewish citizens of the country, considers the election of the followers of Fascism and Nazism in the Greek Parliament as a strong hit against Greek Democracy.
We are sure that our fellow-citizens, the democratic forces of the Greek Parliament, the mass media, the academic and the cultural society will join forces so as to continue the struggle against racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism.
We all have the duty to preserve our dignity and safeguard the principles of freedom, democracy and humanism.

The indescribable tragic event that took place in France, a country with long traditional democratic values, has to arise a great concern for all of us. Apart from our deep grief and our sincere condolences towards the relatives of the innocent victims, the Jewish community as well as the French people, it is our duty to think what we do as individuals in order to deter such hideous events. No one, nevertheless, either country or nation is unaffected from racism, anti-Semitism and similar absurdities.

ANNOUNCEMENT on LAOS MPs JOINING the ND PARTY Print E-mail
Friday, 17 February 2012 14:59

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the Greek Jewry’s concern and surprise for the fact that two MPs, M. Voridis and A. Georgiadis,  recently expelled from the LAOS party, have joined the party of “New Democracy” (ND). In the past these MPs have expressed or associated themselves with insulting anti-Jewish views.

We hope that the leadership of  “New Democracy”, which is a leading Greek party, will take all necessary measures so that such views remain at the margins of the Greek society, and will safeguard the equality of all citizens regardless of race or religion, as provided for by the Constitution.

The Greek Jewry also believes that the same policy against racism and anti-Semitism, as endorsed by all democratic Greek and European parties, will continue.

A.J.C. ASSISTANCE TO GREEK HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 February 2012 13:00
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the American Jewish Committee share and continue a productive cooperation for more than two decades.
In the course of these years, in a vast scale of issues and on various occasions the AJC has repeatedly assisted the Greek Jewry.
Once more, in the past few months, the AJC has actively demonstrated its solidarity through two important support programmes offered during this difficult period when the consequences of the financial crisis have greatly afflicted Greek Jewish Communities, organizations and people.  The most recent donation of the AJC was made following David Harris’ visit to Greece and it includes the sum of 48.000 USD to be distributed to the survivors of the Nazi concentration camps in Greece, who are the most needy and delicate part of our Community. In January, AJC Executive Director David Harris headed a delegation that visited Athens and Thessaloniki. D. Harris met with top Greek officials and Jewish leaders and spoke at the annual Holocaust remembrance ceremony in Thessaloniki (photo).
