KIS PRESS RELEASE FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT IN GREECE

We were informed that the Greek Cabinet, during its meeting of August 30, 2022, sanctioned the proposal of the Justice Minister and appointed Supreme Court Judge Marianthi Pagouteli at the position of the Vice President of Greece’s Supreme Court (Areios Pagos).

During the first instance trial of Konstantinos Plevris* for his antisemitic book “Jews, the whole truth”, Mrs Pagouteli, Judge of Appeals at the time, gave a minority vote advocating for the acquittal of K. Plevris. Mrs Pagouteli in her 32page consideration behind the minority vote justified the antisemitic views of K. Plevris.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the strong resentment of the Greek Jewry for the appointment at the high level of the Greek Justice, of a person who cannot defend the declared position of the Greek State against antisemitism, even more so in the capacity of the Vice President of the Supreme Court of our country.

We express the certainty that the Greek Justice will safeguard the values of Democracy against the followers of intolerance and antisemitism.

Confirmed as Drowned: THE STORY OF THE SHIP TANAIS

Jewish Review of Books, Summer 2022

By Mark Glanville*

On December 14, 1906, a cargo steamship built at the Sunderland shipyards in the northeast of England was launched under the name Holywood. She was then purchased by a Greek shipowner in 1935, who renamed her Tanais, after the ancient Greek colony founded by Milesians. On May 26, 1941, during the Battle of Crete, the ship was sunk by the Luftwaffe, only to be raised and repaired by the Germans, who then deployed her as a cargo ship in the Aegean. In early June, the Nazis filled the holds of the ship with about nine hundred prisoners bound for Auschwitz, among them Cretan partisans, Italian prisoners of war, and the entire Jewish community of Crete, which comprised 299 souls, 88 of them children.

On June 9, the Tanais was torpedoed by the British submarine Vivid, killing all but a handful of passengers. This was the end of the Cretan Jewish community, which had thrived on the island for more than two thousand years. (Jews are said to have served as guards at the palace of Knossos, where King Minos had Daedalus build the labyrinth with his son the Minotaur at its center.)

CULTURAL AND HOLOCAUST COMMEMORATION EVENTS IN CORFU MARKED THE GERMAN PRESIDENCY OF IHRA – October 23 to 25, 2020 Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 October 2020 13:18
A series of events that took place on the island of Corfu from October 23 to 25, 2020, marked the current German presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The program of events was organized by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Greece with the cooperation of the Municipality of Corfu, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) and the local Jewish Community.

In order to conform with the pandemic measures and safeguard public health, this year’s rich program –which included lectures, artistic and historical  exhibitions and a concert- was a functional combination of on-line events as well as local ones, with products that will remain on show in Cofru for educational purposes.

The opening ceremony was held on October 23, at the Municipal Theater and included speeches by the Prefect of the Ionial Islands Ms. Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou, the Mayor Ms. Meropi Hydreou, the German Ambassador Ernst Reichel, KIS President David Saltiel, and the Honorary President of the Corfu Jewish Community Lino Soussis. All speakers stressed the importance of a globally coordinated cooperation in order to combat racism and antisemitism in all its forms, and raise awareness through educational projects.

KIS ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE ATTACKS AGAINST JEWISH SITES – GRAFFITI AT THE HOLOCAUST MONUMENT OF THESSALONIKI Print E-mail
Monday, 19 October 2020 12:21
A hideous graffiti, that last Friday, October 16, 2020, defaced the Holocaust Monument of Thessaloniki, was added to the chain of desecrations, threats and vandalism that occurred last week in Greece: “Juden raus” graffiti at the Jewish Cemetery of Athens, “Death to Israel” at the Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki, four vandalized tombs at the Jewish Cemetery of Rhodes, and this most recent “With Jews you lose” graffiti, spray-painted on the façade of the Monument dedicated to the 50.000 Jews of Thessaloniki who were exterminated during the Holocaust.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece condemns this new wave of vandal attacks, launched by the followers of bigotry and fanaticism as a statement of their presence in a period when the Greek State, the society and recently the Greek Justice have condemned the neo-Nazi groups as criminal organizations. We are not afraid of them!

Tolerating the vandalism of cemeteries and monuments equals tolerating the vandalism of memory and civilization; it represents the toleration of anti-Semitism. We urge the law enforcement authorities to do their utmost to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to Justice. Let us not tolerate behaviors that aim at imposing obscurantism in our country.

I NEVER DOUBTED… ARTICLE BY KIS PRESIDENT DAVID SALTIEL ON GOLDEN DAWN’S CONVICTION Print E-mail
Monday, 26 October 2020 10:19
Published in the Sunday edition of the Greek newspaper TO VIMA, October 11, 2020:

I never doubted… Probably due to the fact that I am not a lawyer or just because of it.

To this day my way of thinking relies upon a combination of history and current data consideration – yet, I never ignore my instinct… And on this occasion there was perfect concordance between critical thinking and instincts that Greek Justice would convict the neo-Nazi party.

Indeed, Justice concluded its mission –an onerous task of high significance- and ruled that Golden Dawn is a criminal organization and that its leadership is not blameless of its member’s activity. This verdict was very rightfully described as a “historic” one and a “landmark decision”. Epic, I would add.

With the representation in Parliament of the neo-Nazi group, our Democracy suffered a strong blow. Eight years later, with the outcome of the trial, Justice showed how strong the foundations of Democracy are in our country because they are built upon the principle of the respect of Human Rights.
