Social services for Nazi victims have been supported by a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
Funds have been provided by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany for the Emergency Assistance Program for Nazi Victims at the direction of the United States District Court supervising the lawsuit In RE: Holocaust Victim Assets Litigation (Swiss Banks).

GREECE PARTICIPATED AS THE GUEST OF HONOR AT THE “MARCH OF THE LIVING” 2019 Print E-mail

Greece was this year's guest of honor at the international educational programme of the "March of the Living", organized every year, since 1988, in Memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The March of the Living started on the 2.5.2019 at the central camp of Auschwitz and ended at Birkenau, where millions of people have been exterminated, being victims of Nazi atrocities. Thousands of people from, not less than fifty seven different countries, including the Hellenic Parliamentary Delegation, have walked the distance of these almost three kilometers that separate the two camps, were the victims languished Nazi ferociousness.

Mr. Nikos Voutsis, President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. David Saltiel, President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki and Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), Mr. Samuel Makis Matsas, President of the Jewish Museum of Greece, Mr. Gabriel Negrin, Rabbi of Athens, Dr. Efstathios Lianos Liantis, Special Secretary for Religious and Cultural Diplomacy, Special Envoy on Combating Antisemitism and Preserving Holocaust Remembrance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Head of the Greek Delegation to the IHRA, Mr. Marcel Solomon, President of the Jewish Community of Volos, were the participating members of the Greek  delegation. The Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness Mr. Bartholomew was leading the "March of the Living" together with Mr. Voutsis. They were accompanied by the Vice-speakers of the Parliament, Messrs. George Varemenos, Anastasia Christodoulopoulou and Marios Georgiades, by Members of the Parliament, by the Chairman of the Town Council of Thessaloniki Mr. Shimon Ben Sasson, the Vice mayor of Thessaloniki, Mrs. Anna Angelidou, by the Director of the Office of the World Jewish Congress in Geneva, Mr. Leon Shaltiel, by the Director of the Charity Organization AGAPE, Mr. Manolis Toufexis and by a delegation of the Greek Jewish Youth.

GREEK MINISTER NIKOS PAPPAS PRESENTS BOOK ON GREEK HOLOCAUST IN YAD VASHEM Print E-mail

The book presentation of the album “Auschwitz – Greeks,  Number Condemned to Death” by George Pilichos, (ed. Hellenic Post, 2018) was held in Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, on December 19, 2018, in the presence of the Greek Minister of Digital Policy, Telecommunications and Media Nikos Pappas and the Chairman of Yad Vashem Directorate Avner Shalev who addressed the highly attended event. The author, history researcher George Pilichos, the First Vice President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece Benjamin Albalas, as well as Moshe Ha-Elion, Holocaust survivor of Greek origins and member of the Board of Yad Vashem, attended the event.

Minister Pappas introduced the book by saying: “Today I humbly deliver to you the Greek part of the Holocaust history, a book that presents the history of the extermination of the Greek citizens, Jewish in their overwhelming majority, in the concentration camps” and concluded with the “obligation of the society not to forget in order not to built up a crooked future”.

The book “Auschwitz – Greeks,  Number Condemned to Death”, an exhaustive and well documented research on the Holocaust of the Greek Jews, was previously presented in Athens, on May 16, 2018, by the President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos, along with the presentation of a commemorative set of stamps, also issued by the Hellenic Post, dedicated to the Holocaust of the Greek Jews.

WJC, NEW YORK - In the aftermath of the deadly shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder is sounding the alarm on the very real threats facing Jewish communities worldwide and urging government authorities to ramp up security efforts to prevent such an attack from happening again.

“The horrific act of terror that took place on Saturday at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburgh has left all Jewish communities, both in the US and abroad, in a state of absolute shock. We have long warned about the sharp rise in antisemitism, on both the far-right and the far-left and have prayed that the many incidences that we have witnessed of late, of vandalism and desecration of property, would never end in loss of life.
“This Shabbat, our worst nightmares came true. Innocent people were killed and wounded for the simple crime of being Jewish. This was an attack specifically targeting the Jewish community, in a deliberate and callous manifestation of antisemitism and hatred, and it should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans that such horror can and has happened here. We must be vigilant in making sure that this never happens again.

DELEGATION OF THE INTERORTHODOX CENTRE OF THE CHURCH OF GREECE VISITED YAD VASHEM Print E-mail

For the first time a delegation of Greek-Orthodox Clergymen coming from the Orthodox Church of Greece has visited Yad Vashem for a special study day program. The Interorthodox Centre of the Church of Greece organized this visit after an official invitation by the Embassy of Israel in Greece.

Metropolitan Ioannis of Thermopylae, the Director of the Interorthodox Centre of the Church of Greece, as Head of the delegation accompanied by a special group of priests and the scientific stuff of the Interorthodox Centre (Mr. Sergios Voilas, Mr. Christos Nasios, Mrs. Kalliopi Mavragka)  had the opportunity to meet and speak with Mr. Moshe Ha’elyon, a Greek-Jewish survivor from the Holocaust.
