The Greek Participation in the “Diplomatic Seminar for Young Jewish Leaders" for 2012 Print E-mail

from Jeffrey Solomon

During the summer of 2012 on July 1st till 12th, the Diplomatic Seminar for Young Jewish Leaders which was organized for the 13th consecutive year by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel, took place in Jerusalem. Thanks to the Israeli Embassy in Athens, I was given the chance to have the pleasure and the honor to represent Greece at this Seminar and I experienced close hand, moments that will accompany me forever.

For 12 days, 37 Young Jews from 25 countries saw, heard and learned many things. We had exceptional lectures by great personalities like the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel Mr. Danny Ayalon, the Chairman of the Jewish Agency Mr. Nathan Scharansky, the Executive Director of the American Jewish Committee Mr. David Harris and several other high level personnel. We also visited many interesting and important places such as the “Knesset”, the “Black Arrow” vantage point over Gaza, the “Yad Vashem” Holocaust museum, the “Beit Hatfutsot” museum of the Jewish people and others, like Intel and Micron facilities in Kiryat Gat, the “Save a child’s heart” hospital in Holon and a one-night stay at Kibbutz Ginosar which gave an individual taste and dimension to our stay in Israel.

The marriage between History and Tradition with High Technology and Science, which displays the plurality of Jewish culture and holds strong over time in all directions, is really impressive and moving. The purpose of this Seminar was the empowerment and tightening of relations of Israel with the Diaspora and, through successive discussions,  suggestions for the solutions of serious issues for Judaism worldwide  today,  especially Anti-Semitism and the “Arab Spring in the Middle East”. A four-day Global Diaspora Summit took also place from 15th till 18th of July, where more than 150 alumni from the years 1999 to 2012 participated.
I strongly recommend the Young Jewish people of our country to register for the Seminar of 2013 so that there will be future representation of Greece and the Greek Jewish community.
It is undoubtedly a unique opportunity for an unforgettable experience for anyone who is fortunate enough to be a participant.
