EUROPEAN JEWISH CONGRESS CALLS ON GREEK PRIME MINISTER SAMARAS TO SUPPORT ANTI-RACISM LAW Print E-mail
Friday, 31 May 2013 07:34
President of the European Jewish Congress (EJC) Dr. Moshe Kantor has called on Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to support an anti-racism bill which would outlaw incitement against people because of their race, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation, and impose jail sentences of up to six years on offenders, according to reports.
“It is imperative that Prime Minister Samaras support this law which would bolster existing legislation against hate and racism,” Kantor said. “With anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia on the rise in Greece, the law enforcement authorities need tougher tools to curb this growing wave of hate rapidly spreading across the country.”
The bill, drafted by Justice Minister Antonis Roupakiotis, would not exclude Members of Parliament and parties that receive public funding would see it suspended if their leaders publicly denied the Holocaust, took part in racist attacks or used Nazi salutes or symbols in Parliament, all hallmarks of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party.
“The Golden Dawn has overstepped all bounds of democracy and their hate-speech, which inspires violence, should be curtailed,” Kantor continued. “We hope this bill will receive sufficient support in the Greek Government and parliament and should not allow human rights and personal security suffer on the altar of political considerations.”
“The bill could signal the start of the fight back for civil liberties and tolerance in Greece and send a positive signal to the rest of Europe that hate and racism will not be tolerated even if finds representation in parliaments
