The President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece Mr. David Saltiel, addressed the following letter to the renowned composer Mikis Theodorakis, with regard to the composer’s reaction to Holocaust denial statements:

Dear Mr. Theodorakis,

Thank you for your letter of June 17, which I read with great interest, together with your article in the newspaper "Ta Nea", in which your views regarding Holocaust deniers –among other things- are made perfectly clear.
The Greek Jews are outraged by the sad fact that Members of the Greek Parliament, from the very podium of the Parliament, were self declared as Holocaust deniers. We are also shocked by the fact that the democratic forces of our country failed to adopt a law that would allow zero tolerance to  racism, xenophobia and antisemitism and of course zero tolerance to Holocaust deniers who practically aim at its repetition.

When the voice of a freedom fighter, a man of Letters and Culture, a great composer who created a requiem for Holocaust victims, such as the “Mauthausen” opera, based on the text of the late Iakovos Kampanelis, when your voice, Dear Mr. Theodorakis, joins our voice and the voices of the Greek democratic citizens, then there is hope to believe that our Democracy can actually be shield against the threats launched by the seekers of Nazism.

Best Regards

The President
David Saltiel
