ANTI-SEMITISM
EUMC Working Definition of Anti-Semitism Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 February 2016 14:13

Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of Anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities. In addition, such manifestations could also target the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectively. Anti-Semitism frequently charges Jews with conspiring to harm humanity, and it is often used to blame Jews for ‘why things go wrong’.

Anti-Semitic acts are criminal when they are so defined by law (for example, denial of the Holocaust or distribution of Anti-Semitism materials in some countries).

Criminal acts are anti-Semitic when the target of attacks, whether they are people or property – such as buildings, schools, places of worship and cemeteries – are selected because they are, or are perceived to be, Jewish or linked to Jews.

Anti-Semitic discrimination is the denial to Jews of opportunities or services available to others and is illegal in many countries.

Mr. Venizelos spoke of a "barbaric act" that "offends the history of not only the Jewish community but the entire Greek people" who respects and honors the memory of the tens of thousands of Greek Jews, who were tragically killed in the Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust.

- The Minister of Public Order Vassilis Kikilias, in his statement said: "I want to condemn this heinous act and to emphasize that the state will show no tolerance for those who insult the memory of thousands of our fellow citizens who lost their lives during the Holocaust”.

DESECRATION OF THE ATHENS HOLOCAUST MONUMENT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN 2014 Print E-mail
Friday, 31 October 2014 13:55
On October 30, 2014, the Holocaust Monument in Athens was vandalized with graffiti signed by the extreme nationalist and anti-Semitic organization  “Unaligned Meander Nationalists” (Greek abbreviation: AME). This organization –which declares to be a hardcore radical and nationalist organization and separates itself from “moderate nationalists” of Golden Dawn- has also signed the desecration of the Holocaust Monument in the island of Rhodes in October 2012.
The Athens Jewish Community and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following Press Release:

The Holocaust Monument in Athens has been vandalized for the second time within 2014. In the night of October 30, 2014, a known neo-nazi organization, with significant activity in Greece, left its signature on the Monument.
The Athens Holocaust Monument is dedicated to the memory of the 60.000 Greek Jews, part of the 6.000.000 of European Jews, who suffered a tragic death in the Nazi concentration camps.

The Athens Jewish Community, that covered the cost of the erection of the Monument, donated it -in 2010- to the municipality of Athens, in order to make it a landmark in the capital city and a reminder to its citizens and visitors of the most heinous mass crime in contemporary history.

The Jewish Community of Athens, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, and the Greek Jewry at large strongly condemn this act of vandalism. We call upon the municipal and state authorities to effectively protect the Holocaust Monument of the capital, in order to avoid repetition of such phenomena. We also call upon the Justice system to put into motion all necessary procedures so that the perpetrators –those whose hateful and violent actions offend the dignity and the cultural heritage of the city- be apprehend and punished.

We also expect the representatives of the State and the Civil Society to come forward and express a strong and determined condemnation of this specific act as well as of every and any act of anti-Semitism.

JTA, WHY IS GREECE THE MOST ANTI-SEMITIC COUNTRY IN EUROPE?, May 20, 2014

New York, NY, May 13, 2014 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today released the results of an unprecedented worldwide survey of anti-Semitic attitudes. The ADL Global 100: An Index of Anti-Semitism surveyed 53,100 adults in 102 countries and territories in an effort to establish, for the first time, a comprehensive data-based research survey of the level and intensity of anti-Jewish sentiment across the world.
The survey found that anti-Semitic attitudes are persistent and pervasive around the world. More than one-in-four adults, 26 percent of those surveyed, are deeply infected with anti-Semitic attitudes. This figure represents an estimated 1.09 billion people around the world.
The overall ADL Global 100 Index score represents the percentage of respondents who answered “probably true” to six or more of 11 negative stereotypes about Jews. An 11-question index has been used by ADL as a key metric in measuring anti-Semitic attitudes in the United States for the last 50 years.

EUROPEAN JEWISH CONGRESS CALLS ON EU TO TAKE ACTIVE STEPS TO REGAIN TRUST OF EUROPEAN JEWRY Print E-mail

EU FRA Survey Indicates Jews have no Faith in Authorities Response to Anti-Semitic Attacks

(Brussels, Friday, November 8, 2013) – The European Jewish Congress (EJC) has called on European leaders and institutions to seriously study the results and take appropriate action after the release of a survey on anti-Semitism by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), showing a substantial rise in the number of Jews who have been subjected to anti-Semitic attacks.
The survey, which took place during September and October comprising approximately 6,000 respondents from Sweden, France, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Latvia, shows that a quarter of respondents said they avoid visiting places and wearing symbols that identify them as Jews for fear of anti-Semitism.
“We commend FRA for conducting this serious and in-depth study on a matter of such importance," said Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress, "However the fact that a quarter of Jews are not able to express their Jewishness because of fear should be a watershed moment for the continent of Europe and the European Union,”.
“The Jewish reality in Europe is of great concern and the authorities need to deal with incidents of hate and intolerance in a holistic manner to really combat these manifestations before it is too late.”
“We would like to see concrete steps being taken, including creating legislation to specifically deal with anti-Semitism and racism, bolstering law enforcement agencies and ensure a zero-tolerance approach to anti-Semitism, even, and perhaps, specifically, when opinion-shapers and decision-makers engage in these forms of hate.”
