PRESS RELEASE

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE BRUTAL MURDER OF FRENCH JEWISH HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR MIREILLE KNOLL Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 March 2018 12:29
Brutality struck again Paris, the “city of light” of the European civilization, with the murder of the 85year-old Mireille Knoll, a French Jewish woman and a Holocaust survivor.

Some times there are no words fit to describe the grief and repugnance we feel, especially when a human being -who 74 years ago experienced the barbarity of the Nazis in the concentration camps and survived gas chambers- is brutally murdered in 2018. All people in Europe must realize that antisemitism may aim against the Jews but it does not end with the Jews. It threatens the fundamental principles of tolerance, religious freedom and equality, it threatens once more the very essence of European civilization. For this reason, Europe needs to timely and effectively fight against antisemitism in order not to mourn over more victims of fanaticism and intolerance.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the solidarity of the Greek Jews towards the French Jewish Community along with our deepest condolences to the family of Mireille Knoll.
On Friday night we celebrate Pessach, the festivity of the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt towards freedom. We do not forget slavery, we do not forget the hardships our people endured through the millennia of its historic course. On Friday night we will light a candle in the memory of Mireille Knoll.

ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE NEW WAVE OF TERROR ATTACKS IN ISRAEL Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 March 2018 14:26
The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the profound sorrow of the Greek Jewry for the death of three Israelis murdered over the past week-end. A father of four children was stabbed in Jerusalem and two young soldiers were the victims of a car-ramming attack in the West Bank.

The new wave of terrorism launched by extremist Palestinian organizations against Israel undermines every peace initiative in the region and triggers hatred and fanaticism once more. At last, it needs to be understood that terrorism will not bring peace. Terrorism causes unbearable pain and jeopardizes the atmosphere of trust that must prevail between the two people in order to achieve the longing peace.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece conveys its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Israel.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE DESECRATION OF THE HOLOCAUST MONUMENT IN THESSALONIKI Print E-mail
Tuesday, 23 January 2018 10:30
Merely a week before the International Holocaust Remembrance Day followers of the Nazi party in Greece stated their presence by desecrating the Holocaust Monument in Thessaloniki with their repulsive signature.

They did not desecrate just the memory of the 50.000 Jews of Thessaloniki, the 65.000 Jews of Greece, the 6.000.000 Jews of Europe deported and exterminated by the Nazis in the German concentration camps. They desecrated the values of Democracy itself, the very civilization of a city, and proved that the remnants of Nazism have still roots in our country. Roots that -if not eradicated by society- might spread even more guiding us again in the darkest period of world history.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece urges one more time the State Authorities, the Church and the social institutions to firmly condemn the vandal attack against the memory and the history of Thessaloniki and of Greece.

Friday, 05 January 2018 14:27

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece sent the following letter to the Counselor Minister of the Embassy of Spain to Greece Mr. Javier Triana Jimenez, regarding the terrorist attack in Barcelona:

“Dear Minister,

On behalf of the Greek Jewry we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the Spanish people for the deadly terror attack that hit the popular tourist area of Las Ramblas in Barcelona. The words are very poor to describe the magnitude of evil, the hatred and the horror of such brutality.

The choice of such a crowded tourist area and the tragic result of the attack, 13 people dead until now and dozens of others injured, shows that the perpetrators wanted to struck the core values of Humanism and Democracy, all principles we stand for and have struggled for.

Joining the whole world, we express our most heartfelt sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims, wishing to all those injured to have a speedy and full recovery.

On behalf of the Greek Jewry, we kindly ask you to convey this message to the Spanish Government and remain”.
