The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece addressed, on March 1st 2022, the following letter to the President of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine Mr. Boris Lozhkin and the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine and Treasurer of the EJC Executive Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich expressing the solidarity of the Greek Jewry to the Jews of Ukraine regarding the attack of Russia on Ukraine.

“Dear Mr. President,

Dear Chief Rabbi,

Our Board and the Greek Jewry as a whole, are closely monitoring the tragedy and the hardships that the Ukrainian people and the Jewish Community have been suffering since the military attack of Russia against Ukraine.

We are shocked by the horrific scenes of war in Ukrainian cities. Our concerns, prayers and thoughts are with you as leaders and with our brothers and sisters of the Jewish Community of Ukraine. During difficult times like these, we may be disheartened in realizing how little the world has learned from the devastation of past wars and atrocities, yet we grow stronger, more determinate and more motivated to continue our work for peace and welfare, against injustice and oppression of human rights.

STATEMENT OF THE GREEK MINISTER OF HEALTH THANOS PLEVRIS FOR JEWS, HOLOCAUST AND ANTISEMITISM Print E-mail
Monday, 14 February 2022 10:38
The Greek Minister of Health Thanos Plevris, in an interview on the sanitary measures for the covid pandemic, which was published in the newspaper “Eleftheros Typos” (Synday’s edition of February 13th, 2022), responded also to the following question regarding his position on Holocaust denial, antisemitism and the Jewish community. Thanos Plevris had apologized for his statements of 2009 while acting as a defense lawyer of his father, the known Holocaust denier Kostas Plevris, during the latter’s trial for the antisemitic book “Jews – The whole truth”. This apology came in response to KIS’s announcement for the appointment of Thanos Plevris as  Minister, in September 2021.

[…] Finally, a personal question. Despite the fact that as a minister you have undertaken certain social initiatives, you have been accused of being an anti-Semite and a supporter of holocaust deniers, since you strongly supported your father's book. What do you have to say on this?

I know that many people believe that the answers I give on this issue are not sincere and are done with ulterior motives, linking me to the positions expressed by my father. I want to be clear in my answer. Indeed, I grew up in an environment with a strong anti-Semitic influence and participated in a party that had also expressed anti-Jewish positions, without reacting. Indeed, a few years ago, in defending my father as his advocate, I strongly opposed the Jewish leadership of the country and expressed views that offend not only the Jews, but also the quality of our Democracy. I was wrong. This acceptance is not a political position, it is a position of restoration of what is righteous.
