Social services for Nazi victims have been supported by a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
Funds have been provided by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany for the Emergency Assistance Program for Nazi Victims at the direction of the United States District Court supervising the lawsuit In RE: Holocaust Victim Assets Litigation (Swiss Banks).

GREEK CULTURE MINISTER INAUGURATES THE EXHIBITION “In the same city. Christians and Jews in Thessaloniki” Print E-mail

The series of exhibitions entitled “In the same city. Christians and Jews in Thessaloniki” was inaugurated in the afternoon of Sunday March 20, 2022, at the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, by the Greek Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni. As Mrs. Mendoni stressed in her speech “the Jewish Museum and its collections will be the core of the collections of the Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki, which the government aims to do as soon as possible”. “We want it to become reality so that it houses not only the memory, but also the history and the cultural identity of the Jewish community, because we owe it to our homeland, to Greece, to Thessaloniki, but especially to all those who were lost, because there were many who got on the train and never returned,” the Minister said.

2022 REMEMBRANCE MARCH IN THESSALONIKI HEADED BY GREEK PRESIDENT SAKELLAROPOULOU AND EC VICE PRESIDENT SCHINAS Print E-mail

Officials, including President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas and Israeli Ambassador Yossi Amrani, participated in a march commemorating the victims of the Holocaust in Thessaloniki on Sunday, March 20, 2022.

 

“It is only if we transmit the historical knowledge to the next generation, if we preserve the memory, if we all have the empathy feel the pain and the anguish of the victims as it were our own, if we understand that the Holocaust is part of an international historical heritage, that can we arm ourselves against the march of evil,” said Sakellaropoulou. 

 

“It is unacceptable to call Nazis those who are defending the independence of their homeland,” said Schinas in a statement uploaded to social media, alluding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that is being conducted on the pretense of “denazification.”

CEREMONY FOR THE UNVEILING OF THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL IN XANTHI Print E-mail

Memories of the presence of the Jews in Xanthi came alive on Sunday 20.2.2022 with the unveiling of the local Holocaust Memorial. The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece with the cooperation of the Municipality and the Cultural and Development Center of Thrace (PAKETHRA) organized an event for the unveiling of the Holocaust Memorial, within the framework of the Greek Presidency of the IHRA, in memory of the 526 Xanthi Jews who were exterminated in the Holocaust.

At the base of the Monument, which was symbolically placed in Eleftherias Square in Xanthi, 526 pebbles were placed, as many as the Jews of Xanthi who were exterminated by the Nazis, as well as parts of two railway rails that symbolize their route to the concentration camp in Treblinka.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Ministers, MPs, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the religious authorities, the local government, Army, Fire Brigade, the Police, the Democritus University of Thrace, mayors, representatives of Jewish communities and organizations, as well as many people.

Before the ceremony, the officials visited the Jewish cemetery of Xanthi, where a memorial service was held by Rabbi of Thessaloniki Aaron Israel and then the Mayor of Xanthi Emmanuel Tsepelis, welcomed the official guests to the Town Hall. They then walked together to Eleftherias Square where the event took place, which began with a memorial service by the Rabbi of Thessaloniki Aaron Israel.

This was followed by greetings of the Mayor of Xanthi, Emmanuel Tsepelis, the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Christos Metios, the Ambassador of Israel Yossi Amrani, the President of the International Alliance for the Remembrance of the Holocaust, George Polydorakis, the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities, David Saltiel and the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece addressed, on March 1st 2022, the following letter to the President of the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine Mr. Boris Lozhkin and the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine and Treasurer of the EJC Executive Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich expressing the solidarity of the Greek Jewry to the Jews of Ukraine regarding the attack of Russia on Ukraine.

“Dear Mr. President,

Dear Chief Rabbi,

Our Board and the Greek Jewry as a whole, are closely monitoring the tragedy and the hardships that the Ukrainian people and the Jewish Community have been suffering since the military attack of Russia against Ukraine.

We are shocked by the horrific scenes of war in Ukrainian cities. Our concerns, prayers and thoughts are with you as leaders and with our brothers and sisters of the Jewish Community of Ukraine. During difficult times like these, we may be disheartened in realizing how little the world has learned from the devastation of past wars and atrocities, yet we grow stronger, more determinate and more motivated to continue our work for peace and welfare, against injustice and oppression of human rights.

The leadership of the Greek Jewish Community and representatives of the Greek Jewish Youth had the opportunity to meet the President of the State of Israel Isaac Herzog at a special event held on the side of his official visit to Greece, on February 24, 2022.

The Israeli President, accompanied by the Israeli ambassador to Greece Mr. Yossi Amrani, was welcomed by KIS President David Saltiel, who briefed him on the key issues and the ongoing projects of the Greek Jewish Community. The Israeli President Herzog in his address referred to the thriving relations between Greece and Israel and the important role of the Jews of Greece as a determining link of this relation. There followed an open discussion focused on international, Israeli and Greek Jewish issues.
