Social services for Nazi victims have been supported by a grant from the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany.
Funds have been provided by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany for the Emergency Assistance Program for Nazi Victims at the direction of the United States District Court supervising the lawsuit In RE: Holocaust Victim Assets Litigation (Swiss Banks).

 Israel and Greece join forces in combating Racism, Xenophobia and anti-Semitism

The first bilateral dialogue between Israel and Greece on combating racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism was held in Athens on Wednesday, December 19th, 2018. Participants included high-ranking government, judicial and law enforcement officials from both countries as well as a human rights group specializing in combating anti-Semitism and racist hate crimes.

The dialogue was organized by the General Secretariat for Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights of the Hellenic Republic in collaboration with the Embassy of Israel.  Ms. Maria Giannakaki, the Secretary General for Human Rights, opened the proceedings.

Discussions between the Israeli and Greek experts focused on ways to combat racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism in the social media and the internet, the criminal investigation of hate crimes, the training of prosecutors and judges in detecting and prosecuting racist hate crimes, law enforcement procedures in tackling anti-Semitism as well as analyzing ways to combat anti-Semitic incidents in Greece.

DELEGATION OF THE INTERORTHODOX CENTRE OF THE CHURCH OF GREECE VISITED YAD VASHEM Print E-mail

For the first time a delegation of Greek-Orthodox Clergymen coming from the Orthodox Church of Greece has visited Yad Vashem for a special study day program. The Interorthodox Centre of the Church of Greece organized this visit after an official invitation by the Embassy of Israel in Greece.

Metropolitan Ioannis of Thermopylae, the Director of the Interorthodox Centre of the Church of Greece, as Head of the delegation accompanied by a special group of priests and the scientific stuff of the Interorthodox Centre (Mr. Sergios Voilas, Mr. Christos Nasios, Mrs. Kalliopi Mavragka)  had the opportunity to meet and speak with Mr. Moshe Ha’elyon, a Greek-Jewish survivor from the Holocaust.

THE LEGACY OF AMOS OZ FOR CONTEMPORARY ISRAEL - A CONVERSATION WITH FANIA OZ Print E-mail

On May 9, 2019 a de profundis and stirring conversation about the legacy of Amos Oz in today's Israel took place at V. & M. Theocharakis Foundation for Fine Arts and Music. The daughter of Amos Oz, Professor Fania Oz Salzberger, was invited to attend the event which marked the 71st anniversary of the independence of Israel and was organized by the Embassy of Israel and the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece.

Fania Oz, a professor of history at Haifa University Law School, discussed with journalist Elias Maglinis, a literature critic and author himself and with Dimitris P. Sotiropoulos, a professor of history at the University of the Peloponnese.

During the event Fania Oz was welcomed by Mrs. Irit Ben-Abba, the Israeli Ambassador to Greece and by the Secretary General of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, Mr. Victor Eliezer.  In her speech the Ambassador referred to the carry of the work of this important Israeli author in Greece and on how well-loved is he by the Greek public. The Secretary General, in his turn, mentioned the book "Jews and words", written by both Amos Oz and his daughter Fania and read some precise excerpts reflecting the relationship between Jews and God, concluding that "today we feel that Amos is with us, as well".

LOUKIA SALTIEL, THE WIFE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE CENTRAL BOARD OF JEWISH COMMUNITIES IN GREECE PASSED AWAY Print E-mail

On December 20, 2018, Loukia Saltiel the wife of the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, passed away.

Her funeral will be held on Sunday December 23, 2018 at 12.00 hrs at the Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki.

The late Loukia Saltiel was an active and dynamic member of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki who dedicated her life to charities and offered her valuable contribution to many Jewish organizations of Thessaloniki. She was a worthy and carrying wife, mother and grandmother who transmitted to her family the Jewish values and traditions.

The history of the Jews who lived in our city was the subject of the work that was carried out in the 2017-18 school year from Section B4 of the 6th General Lyceum of Heraklion within the framework of the "Project" course.

The work aimed at seeking the historical presence and course of the Jewish community in Heraklion until their complete extermination by the German Nazis in 1944.

The supervising professor, computer scientist with Msc in Theology, Mr. George Chatzizisis, told "PATRIS" that the children participated with particular interest in the search for information and enjoyed the role of the historical researcher.

He proposed to students to work for a population group that no longer exists in our city because of population or war exchanges such as Muslims and Catholics. The pupils even mourned when they learned.
