With regard to recent repeated racist comments made by Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos against Greek basketball NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo during an online webcast (August 26, 2013), the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following announcement:

“The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the Greek Jewry’s repugnance over the repeated racist statements made by the leader of “Golden Dawn” against the young basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Board also expresses its most determined condemnation of these statements.

Such ideologies, based on racist motives that promote hatred and incite violence, constitute a clear violation of the fundamental principals of Democratic Constitution which provides for equality regardless skin color, race, or religion.
These outrageous statements make clear that the need of a strong antiracism law is even more eminent in order to fortify constitutional freedoms and ethical values aiming at safeguarding the respect of human rights and the peaceful coexistence of people.
