ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE DESECRATION OF THE ATHENS JEWISH CEMETERY Print

On October 20, 2015 the entrance of the Jewish cemetery of the Athens Jewish Community was vandalized with swastikas and anti- Semitic graffiti.

Nazi swastika and the German word “Raus”, along with the tag C18, was sprayed on the cemetery gate, as well as to one of the cemetery surrounding walls.

C-18, who claimed responsibility, refers to Combat 18 Hellas, a neo-Nazi group operating in Greece. The group posted pictures on their BlogSpot bragging about their action.

The same pictures were also posted on the BlogSpot of the neo-Nazi group “UNALIGNED MEANDER NATONALISTS - AME” (responsible for other vandal attacks against Jewish targets in the past) who praised the C-18 group for their action.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece issued the following Press Release:

“The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expresses the repudiation of the Greek Jewry and condemns the vandalism of the Jewish cemetery of the Athens Jewish Community.  The racists without any shame provoke with their announcement by saying that they will continue their barbaric actions.

The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece and the Greek Jewry call upon the Greek authorities to trace down, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.  We also expect the representatives of the State and the Civil Society to prove in practice once again, that in our county racism and anti-Semitism are not tolerated”.
