A cartoon depicting frm Finance Minsiter Yanis Varoufakis as “Shylock” or as “Jewish loan shark”, designed by cartoonist Efi Xenou, was published in the Greek mainstream daily TA NEA of October 30, 2015, in the column “Stigma” of journalist George Papachristou.

In a letter to the editor the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece strongly protested the blatant anti-Semitism of the cartoon and characterized it as “unacceptable” and “contemptible” and “mostly dangerous as it refers to religious hatred and perpetuates old prejudices and stereotypes that should not have place in our contemporary society”. On the issue of November 2, 2015, of TA NEA, the columnist criticized the Greek Jewry for over-reacting.
